Year 3
It’s been another busy week. The children have earned a week off handwriting home learning – I suspect some of them might find this a challenge at this point of a long half term.
In English, the children planned and wrote some lovely, evocative Harvest poems. We have begun using the expanded column method for addition in maths and the children have taken this new method in their stride.
We had a great science lesson looking at endo- exo- and hydrostatic skeletons, as well as beginning to learn the names of bones in the human skeleton. In computing, we continued to use loops to draw different shapes using the Pro-bots. In geography, we began researching the physical geography of Italy and Costa Rica, two countries the United Kingdom imports fruit and vegetables from. The children designed healthy, balanced wraps in DT, which they will make on Monday. The children broke their record for the weekly RE quiz with Mrs Chittock – 1 minute 49 seconds! Mrs Grosvenor made a guest appearance and taught PE (she was impressed with the class, so well done Year 3). Miss Spinks and the children discussed what bullying is in PSHE.
Wishing you a lovely, autumnal weekend it has certainly felt like the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ today.

Year 4
Another busy week and the children are starting to show signs of fatigue. Please don't over-tire them this weekend as we have another week of full on learning. Our reading this week was again better but not enough to even get us third place. Don't forget, homework is; Maths Targets, Times Tables, EdShed and Reading. There will be further homework coming soon (make the most of the free time whilst you can!). One thing that all the children need practice on is speedy mental recall of subtraction below 20, ie: 14 - 6, 19 - 5 etc. To be able to do this mentally and reasonably quickly will help with the current addition and subtraction unit. Addition seems to be OK, but they are struggling with Subtraction.
Our Learning this week;
English - We finished planning and started writing our invention text about our Mythical Monster.
Maths - We continued using the expanded column method for addition and subtraction.
Music - The children learnt to sing, and hand jive to, Rock around the clock, ready for moving on to 'Walking the bass' being played on the glockenspiel.
Topic - We looked at how the Anglo-Saxons helped to spread Christianity.
PHSE - Making smart choices surrounding issues around alcohol. The unit is called; Making choices, based around drugs, tobacco and alcohol.
Computing - Programming ProBots to write letters.
RE - Reading a bible story and identifying where or how the salvation/rescue appears.
Have a lovely weekend, four days to half-term, time is flying so fast!

Year 5
We have returned to the top of the Star Reader tree with 100% of the class being a Star Reader last week. This is an amazing achievement that has only happened once before (and that was about 6 years ago!) We will definitely have to commemorate it in some way.
In English this week, we have continued learning about the Roswell UFO. We've thought about how to turn direct speech into reported speech, practiced writing more 'show, don't tell' sentences, planning and written our own account of the Roswell UFO and then found out what actually happened. Next week, we will be finishing off our space unit but writing a non-chronological report about a planet.
In Maths this week, we have been practicing and refining our written method for subtraction. We have tried to be 'conscious' calculators and have been thinking about which is the best method to use before starting. Some calculations can be done mentally, some need jottings and some need a formal written method. We've had a go at solving some tricky missing number addition calculations and even had a go at solving some addition pyramids.
In Science, we recapped Gravity and then used Newton metres to measure how much force is needed to move objects on Earth. We then used some maths to help us work out how much force would be needed to move those objects on the Moon and Jupiter.
Next week, we will have our harvest celebration at Church and two different football tournaments - busy until the end!
Have a super weekend.

Year 6
It's been a fabulously busy week in Y6 with lots of impressive learning.
-
In English this week, we have been writing an assessment as an entry for a 'Dog of the Year' competition. We have also read a narrative based on Dulce et Decorum est.
-
In maths, we have been dividing by two digits using factors and being introduced to long division. Long division is often a VERY challenging subject, but Miss Spinks and I are impressed with the progress the children have made. This will continue into next week.
-
In history, we looked at some of the reasons which led to the end of WW1 and categorised them.
-
In Science this week we made pericopes which demonstrate how light travels in straight lines and how it can be reflected by mirrors.
-
In Computing we learnt about how to use variables with a Microbit. This enabled us to code it to be a score card for Rock, Paper, Scissors.
-
In PSJE, we looked at the sensitive topic of homelessness, some of the reasons why this can happen and what it means to be homeless.
-
In French, the children were learning about the names of rooms in the house and were using language to compare these.
-
In RE, we completed an assessment which answered the question 'How does the belief in Incarnation show that Jesus is God incarnate.
Home learning this week:
Have a super weekend!
