Year 3
What a lovely week – both the weather and year 3 children have been amazing! It meant we could conduct our science investigation into forces (gravity and friction) outdoors. The children worked well in their groups and tested the cars on ramps with different surfaces at varying heights.
In maths, we have been learning about money, converting between pounds and pence and adding and subtracting amounts. This linked nicely to discussing different payment methods in PSHE. Some of our children are racing up the times table mountain – we have a number on gold, and even platinum, now! We do appreciate your support in practising times tables. The children have written persuasively, encouraging visitors to Moulton, and continued to focus on The Iron Man in whole class reading and comprehension.
In DT, the children have learned the tricky skill of applique, in RE about Christian charities and when to use j’ai (I have) and je suis (I am) correctly in French. We finished the week researching jobs in the horse racing industry and how these have changed since the 17th century, when Charles II reinstated the sport, following the death of Oliver Cromwell and the reinstatement of a king to the throne.
Do enjoy the weekend – ice creams all around! The year 3 team.
Year 4
This week we have been busying ourselves, once more, with decimal values. We have confidently divided by 100 and even moved onto formal division. In English, we’ve slowly built up a personal tale around our book, ‘The Widow’s Broom’, which explores ideas of prejudice and misunderstanding. Other than this, we’ve explored Jesus’ word pictures for Christians to be salt and light, finished looking at who was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic and, developed our collage skills by looking at the artist Kurt Schwitters.
Please do keep up all of the hard work with maths targets, practising timetables and, of course, daily reading. Thank you in advance and drop me an email if you have any questions regarding this.
Thanks,
Mr T
Year 5
It’s been lovely to enjoy the sunshine this week. We’ve been able to take two of our English lessons outside to make the most of it! Please make sure your child is wearing sun cream and is bringing a hat to school, so they can safely enjoy this lovely weather.
In English, we have been learning more about some of the main characters in Oliver Twist. We have looked at how Oliver first meets the Artful Dodger and Fagin in turn. We have been acting out these interactions. We definitely have some budding thespians in the room! In maths, we have been learning about decimal and fraction equivalence. We’ve learnt there are some we just need to know (0.5, 0.25. 0.2, 0.75) and there are some we can work out. Next week, we will begin to look at how percentages link to fractions and decimals.
Next week, the Y6s will be sitting their SATs tests, which will mean some changes for the whole school, but for Y5 most of all. Some Y6s will be taking their assessments in our classroom, so Y5 will be spending the first part of the morning in the hall. Upon arriving at school, Y5 should head straight to the hall. I am involved in the administration of the SATs, so Y5 will be left in the capable hands of Mrs Marsh and Mr Coldwell. I am sure you will join me in wishing Y6 lots of luck – they will be brilliant!
Next Friday is a non-uniform day for Mental Health Awareness week. The theme is green or active wear. Y5 will still be swimming and have PE, so the theme fits well! We are not asking for any contributions to this.
Have a wonderful weekend
Miss Rutter, Mrs Marsh and Mr Coldwell
Year 6
It's been an intense but very purposeful week this week.
As you would expect, we have been revising the material for SATs.
We are not setting homework for the reasons outlined in the email sent earlier.
Have a super weekend.
Nuala Gilmore
