Year 3
We ended the week with sunshine and a more spring-like feeling! The children are rehearsing brilliantly for the play – please encourage them to learn their songs and lines by heart. We have been slightly embarrassed each week when reporting our star reader percentage for the weekly opportunity to win Bookster the Bear. Please do record your child’s reading or get them to write it in their reading records.
Maths: we are diving into fractions understanding the what the numerator and denominator, the ‘whole’ and comparing and ordering non-unit fractions with the same denominator, e.g. 2/5 < 4/5 or 7/8 > 3/8.
English: we have begun to explore ‘The Secret Garden’ through discussion of the story, a book review and a reading comprehension on the first chapter from the original text. We practised spelling and grammar as usual.
The children used compasses to follow and create directions on a 2D map, learnt about Karma in RE, drew geometric shapes found in everyday objects in Art, learnt that the adjective usually follows the noun in French and labelled and wrote about the parts of a plant in science. Have a fantastic weekend – here’s hoping the sunshine continues!
Year 4
‘This week, we’ve kicked off our play rehearsal, focusing on the songs. Lines should have been sent home too (email if you haven’t received them) and, we’ve continued our journey with fractions beyond a whole. Mrs Shipp has been incredibly impressed with our stamina for writing whilst we’ve written an invent wishing tale. This has been all about a boy who is a whale spotter. In Science, our focus has been sound involving a drum experiment. Other than that we’ve whizzed through the water cycle, explored the symbols of Jewish covenant and, discussed how to stay safe during online games.
Thank you for those who I’ve already seen at parent’s evening and, I’m looking forward to all the ways we can see your child’s progress in the coming term.
Please make sure that your child is reading at least five times a week, if not six times to be a Star Reader. In addition, we are having a big drive on practise with Times Tables Rockstars in Year 4. There will be a ‘Top 3’ leaderboard as of next week. Thank you in advance!
Finally, there will be more information coming out shortly about the residential trip to the Jarmin Centre on the 22nd April. We will ensure we communicate this in good time so there is space for any additional questions.
Year 5
We’ve jumped straight back into the action this week. On Monday, we started our new topic for this half term – Ancient Egypt. We focused on where exactly the Ancient Egyptian period and how to correctly date things that happened so long ago. Did you know that Cleopatra is closer in history to the invention of the iPhone than she is to the building of the Great Pyramid at Giza?
In English, we have been doing lots of reading about a mythical creature called a Liosp. We had lots of fun today putting actions to the first half of our text map. In Maths, we have been placing improper fractions and mixed numbers on empty number lines and have begun to use a bar model to help us calculate fractions of amounts.
It was lovely to see so many of you at the parents’ evening sessions this week. If you were unable to come this week, but would like to arrange a time to pop in for a chat, just email me to arrange.
Have a super weekend,
Miss Rutter, Mr Coldwell and Mrs Marsh
Year 6
It has been lovely to share your child's successes with you this week.
It has been a very busy and productive week in Year 6.
In English, we have been finishing our tales of suspense and we have started our new unit on Macbeth - this has been really well-received by the pupils, and this shall be the focus for this half term, particularly focusing on response to text.
In maths, we have been revising percentages as well as looking at aspects of the reasoning paper lots of children found challenging.
In RE, the children were learning about the spiritual pathways to Moksha.
In history, we started our new unit, focusing on religious change in Tudor times, learning about the changes to the Catholic church and religion in England as a result of Martin Luther's actions.
In PSHE, we have been learning about the dangers of solvents.
Today has been quite an excitable day, with lots of chatter about transition to secondary school. If your child is disappointed, we are here to support and to remember that lists do change; schools have waiting lists, and we will support transition to all schools.
Home learning: maths and grammar this week. (A number of parents requested extra grammar). There is a grammar guide as part of the learning pack which is on Google Classroom.
Many parents asked me about additional resources for SATs preparation. Here are some pictures of the books (available on Amazon) which people have found helpful in the past. Please note that the books come in two different levels, so please choose WITH your child as they should be able to say which is best suited to them.
