Year 3
Good News: We’ve had an amazing week of play rehearsals and I’m delighted to let you know that the children are all set for their dress rehearsal and performances next week! Their dedication and enthusiasm have been wonderful to see.
Please check your emails from the school office for important information regarding tickets. Also, don’t forget to ask your child which side of the hall will give you the best view of them during the performance - this way, you won’t miss their special moment!
Homework Update: There will be no spelling or handwriting homework this week. The children have been working incredibly hard, so I’d like them to focus on:
- Reading at least five times this week.
- Practising their maths targets and times tables to keep their skills sharp.
Computing: The children have been busy creating storyboards in iMovie to design book trailers for The Secret Garden. They’ve explored a variety of camera angles and learned how to combine video and text to bring their ideas to life.
Maths: Our focus this week has been on capacity and volume, working with litres and millilitres. This is a great skill to reinforce at home - why not encourage your child to:
- Measure out ingredients while cooking or baking.
- Compare the capacity of different containers in the kitchen or bathroom.
- Estimate and check how much liquid common household items can hold.
English: The children have written some delightful descriptions of their chosen characters from The Secret Garden. I’ve been especially impressed by their growing writing stamina, thoughtful word choices, and improving handwriting - well done to them all! We have also completed several spelling, grammar and punctuation related activities.
Art: Although we didn’t have time for our regular art session this week, we did enjoy expressing our creativity during Reading Cafe, and we completed a special art project on Wednesday. We hope the special ladies in our children’s lives will enjoy this lovely surprise!
Thank you for your support this term, as it has been a busy one for children, parents and staff alike - I’m so proud of all the children’s hard work and can’t wait for you to see their performance!

Year 4
The children are really showing signs of tiredness now. One week to go, and a very busy full on week it will be too. Thank you to those that came to Reading Cafe on Wednesday I hope you enjoyed it. Play rehearsals have been full on this week with props and costumes to manage.
Our learning this week;-
English - The children started looking at a new text, Escape from Pompeii and we were looking at adjectives, and different types of nouns.
Maths - we looked at dividing and multiplying by 10 including decimals and ended the week on an assessment. With Mrs Harper the children looked at the different types of triangles.
Topic - We talked about primary and secondary sources of information in history. Then we looked at a diary recount form Pliny the younger about the events of 24th August 79AD.
Science - The children looked at the results of their experiment involving eggs.
Computing - The children used the Freeform app on iPads to design and draw their own machine to sense extreme weather.
Music - practicing the songs for the play.
I will be sending out the Information and Kit List for Burwell House Residential next week, it's getting close and I'm getting really excited, it's going to be great.
I look forward to seeing you at the performances next week,
Have a fabulous weekend,
Mrs Chittock and the Year 4 team
Year 5
It was lovely to see lots of you at our penultimate Reading Cafe of this school year. I enjoyed hearing the children talk about all their quirks, foibles and traits (although I was slightly bemused by 'slay' being used as a trait rather than a verb). On Thursday afternoon, we made our Ancient Egyptian style death masks. The children worked really hard to accurately construct their masks and paint their designs carefully. Many of them chose to wear their masks to assembly this morning, which certainly livened up the celebration.
In English, we have been looking at one of my favourite poems: Jim - who ran away from his nurse and who was eaten by a lion. We've analysed this poem for poetic features and had a great discussion about the message it gives and how the poet has used humour to help him deliver his message. In Maths, we've been converting fractions to decimals and vice versa to make it easier to compare and order them.
In History, we learnt about mummification (a rather messy, time-consuming business). We learnt about all the steps a Pharaoh had to go through on the journey to the afterlife, and now have an understanding of why those baddies at the end of Scooby Doo couldn't have been real mummies (the wrappings can't just fall off a real mummy!) In RE, we continued to learn about Buddhism and the symbolism of the Triple Gem. Further up the newsletter, you may have seen a model one of our class made of the Triple Gem at home. In Science, we learnt about pollination. Did you know that pollinators pollinating crops is worth $12.6 billion dollars a year in Europe alone! Mrs Manning happened to walk into Y5 as I was pretending to be a bee who was cross-pollinating some Y5s, who were pretending to be Tulips. I thought we all had very accurate portrayals of our roles, but you'd have to ask her to be sure.
Next week, we will make our Bolognese, have our final playmakers session and head to church for our Easter service!
Have a great weekend,
Miss Rutter, Mrs Marsh and Mrs Nichols
Year 6
Another week has flown by, and we have had a busy and productive time in the classroom!
This week, we have been assessing where the children are in maths and English, which will help us tailor our revision programme for the next half term. The children approached each paper with great confidence, demonstrating their knowledge and skills. It was wonderful to see their determination and the sense of pride they felt in their achievements. Their hard work and positive attitude have been truly commendable.
In science, we conducted an exciting investigation into the effects of exercise on pulse rates. The children enjoyed measuring their pulse before and after different physical activities, and they were fascinated by how their bodies responded to movement. This hands-on experiment helped them understand the relationship between exercise and heart rate in a fun and engaging way.
In history, we have been developing our analytical skills by exploring different historical sources. The children have been learning how to assess the usefulness and reliability of various accounts, considering factors such as bias, perspective, and context. Their thoughtful discussions and critical thinking have been impressive.
Meanwhile, in art, the children have been working on their textile representations of Romeo and Juliet. They have been using their creativity to design pieces that reflect key themes and emotions from the play. It has been wonderful to see their ideas take shape as they experiment with different materials and techniques.
Overall, it has been a fantastic week of learning, and we are looking forward to even more learning next week!
Home learning this weekend: the children are planning their alternative ending to Macbeth. This is an A3 sheet which needs to be completed by Tuesday.
Have a super weekend.
